1 Why ethics training?
Undertaking research activities with The Aurum Project requires you to have an appreciation of issues about ethics and an ability to apply sound ethical principles in your research activity. For a lot of us, the idea of research and ethics seem like academic constructs that may diverge from our idea of the research idea we have in mind. This module is designed for you to move from a novice position in research ethics to a greater appreciation of the importance of ethics. At the end you will have a sound foundation and ability to address the ethical issues in your proposed research activity.
At The Aurum Project, we prefer to think of research ethics as a way of deep listening. The kind of practice we might use with our patients, we want to bring those qualities to our research. When we acknowledge how we feel about sharing our own data with others, we begin to feel the immense trust that our patients place in us when they share their data with us. It is this relationship that we prefer to focus on when framing the ethics of seeking informed consent from our patients.
Research with humans has a dark history. Understanding this history, from, for example WWII and then later in the experiments in Behavioural and Social Psychology where studies were undertaken that pushed the boundaries and forced researchers to define what is ethical, will give an important foundation for exploring ethics in research. If you're interested in exploring more about some seminal studies that moved society into our current understanding and brought the ethics in human research to the foreground you could explore the 1961 Milgram Experiment and 1971 Stanford Prison experiment .
