Budget Bungalows/Homestays:

  • Raka Rai Bungalows  (AUS $20 a night per person) family run guesthouse, a few minutes walk from Ubud, close to Monkey forest.
  • Abangan Bungalows  ($23 a night double room with breakfast) Good basic room at a good price, stay here if you are not after all the bells and whistles. Breakfast is served to the room, simple but just enough for the day. 100 meters from Ubud market in a quiet spot surrounded by lucious trees, paddy fields and small streams.
  • Puri Wisnu Bungalows (AUS $22 a night per person) on Monkey Forest road, with an ancient bridge and banyan trees – beautiful forest with little waterfall and streams. The monkeys? Leave them alone! If you dont want the monkeys to jump on you just dont have food. The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a photographers delight.
  • Puri Sekar Ayu  Bangalows Campuhan (AUS$43 a night  double room) A 5-minute drive from the famous Monkey Forest and a 2-minute walk from Ubud Palace, overlooks the greenery and Tjampuhan Bridge.
  • Taman Indrakila   ($35-40 a night double room) on the edge of the hillside and no other neighbours, the sound of the rapids below and the view is sensational. The rooms are basic but the view more than compensates for any lack of 5 star rating.
  • De munut Bungalows ($41-50 a night including breakfast) Balinese homey feeling, situated just outside of the centre of Ubud about 15 minutes pleasant walk into Ubud  though for some the walk back up the hill to the hotel might be a bit steep.

Mid price range:

  • Puri Saraswati Bungalows  (AUS$78 a night double room) in the center of  Ubud with easy access to restaurants, shops and ATM’s. Next door is the Lotus garden and temple grounds. Wifi here like many places in Ubud is completely unreliable –  if constant online connectivity is a must, there is Starbucks next door.
  • Anhera Suite Ubud www.anherahotelbali.com (AUS$80 a night double room) The view from the swimming pool overlooks the valley of rice terraces. Some people say renting a scooter is a must.  There is free shuttle service at Anhera if you wish to use it but there are many restaurants and shops just outside the front door.
  • Sri Ratih Cottages (AUS$72 deluxe room three people) homey Balinese style, this place is outside of the centre of Ubud about 15 minutes walk into Ubud,  for some the walk back up the hill might be a bit steep.
  • Bliss Ubud (AUS $62 a night double room) in the middle of the rice fields,  6 rooms with a small boutique hotel feel, offers ayurveda, stone massage and chocolate treatment (!?) Free  shuttle bus provided on request but return on your own.  30 minutes walk  or 5 minute taxi that will only cost a few dollars from downtown Ubud.
  • Ulun Ubud (AUS$90 a night double room) 3km from town with free shuttle, perched on the side of a ravine over looking a beautiful river. There are a lot of stairs but that adds to the magical experience.

Higher price range:

  • Ananda Cottages (AUS $120 a night double room) cottages in Balinese style some with big verandahs and open-air bathroom  (snails and frogs come free), 3 swimming pools, with view over jungle and rice fields. 25 minutes walk into Ubud.
  • Hotel Tjampuhan (AUS$118 a night double room) established as a guesthouse in 1928 by a German artist. 70 thatched dwellings, perched on a steep but beautiful river valley. There are many steps and anyone with a mobility problem should avoid the hotel.
  • Wakanamya (AUS $150 a night double room) just outside Ubud in Penestanan but walkable into the centre, free shuttle bus, no TV, just beautiful surroundings, with traditional rice barn cottages with intricate carved doors, aged statues and tropical gardens.
  • Chapung (AUS $315 a night double room or $410 a night four people) nearby rice field, 30minutes walk to Ubud or  shuttle at certain time of day, your own villa, with spacious rooms.
