Research on childhood behaviour
A case series analysis of the remedy Hyoscyamus has just been
published in the June edition of Similia, the Australian Homeopathic
Association journal. The study by Penny Barron was an Aurum Project
initiative. Her results suggested a possible new finding of maternal
trauma as a causative factor of children needing the remedy. The study
included age/sex distribution, presenting symptoms, causations, remedy relationships, and efficacy.
The children all presented with behavioural problems concurrently
with physical problems. 93.3% of the children had a positive response
even if slight and 53.3% had a long term curative response.
Having completed a BSc, Penny has a strong interest in simplifying
the daunting research process for fellow homeopaths.

Indian Homeopathic Internship
In January this year, Sunny Goddard led five Australian homeopaths
participating in a two week clinical internship at the
ShriKamaxideviHomeopathicHospital, Goa, India. In conjunction with The Aurum Project she is aiming for this practical clinical experience in
India to become incorporated into the Australian homeopathic
curriculum as an internship.
The hospital is a designated homeopathic hospital, successfully
treating, with homeopathy alone: arthritis, anxiety, depression, ENT
and headaches, amongst several other presenting conditions.

Australian Research Priorities
After consultation with homeopathic industry representatives, the
Australian Homeopathic Research Priorities document has been completed and can be viewed at www.aurumproject.org.au
The highest priority was found to be increasing auditing and data
collection skills amongst our Australian homeopathic practitioners.
The Aurum Project is working in conjunction with David Levy to
organise auditing workshops in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. With a background of Masters of Education, David’s workshops “Harness Your Success” will give us an opportunity for a hands on/ interactive day, and a practical inside look at data collection. The implementation of these workshops is supported by the Australian HomeopathicAssociation, EndeavourCollege and Homeoquest Computer Repertory systems. Dates for these workshops will be announced in upcoming newsletters.

Current research interests & undertakings
Sharing of expertise, cooperation and collaboration is now seen as a
priority in homeopathic research. When grants are offered or funding
is available the question, “Where is the expertise?” can be
answered by referring to the Aurum Project’s website under the page:
‘Research’. Current undertakings are also included.
The Aurum Project encourages networking and collaboration in the
planning, organising or carrying out of research. Please send us your
details by email.

Overseas research
Homeopathy is as effective as conventional therapy in children with
eczema, but without side effects, concluded the first prospective
cohort study to compare homeopathy with conventional treatments.
The German study of 118 children found that homeopathy was equal to
treatment by GP’s in relieving symptoms and improving quality of
life. Symptom scores, as assessed by parents at one year, were
similar. The authors said this trial provided good evidence for the
use of homeopathy for the treatment of eczema and gave a ‘more
realistic picture’ of eczema therapy than that seen in a
placebo-controlled randomized controlled trial.
Published in: Complementary Therapies in Medicine. Keil, T. & Witt,
C. (2008) Homoeopathic versus conventional treatment of children
with eczema: A comparative cohort study.

The Australian National Homeopathic Conference.
The Australian National Homeopathy conference was a huge success,
with the emphasis being the importance of research. The keynote
speaker Dr Peter Fisher, gave an excellent view of homeopathic
research around the world. He is the Clinical and Research Director of
the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital in London, physician to HRH
the Queen and Chair of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO)
homœopathic working group.
Dr Fisher is the Editor of the leading international journal,
Homeopathy, the only journal dedicated to homeopathy indexed by
Medline. Aside from these credentials, Dr Fisher is an outspoken
champion of complementary medicine. He has a wealth of experience
as both a rheumatologist and homoeopath and his contribution to
research is significant.
